Kmart Tunes In to Online Music Sales

Looking to get in on the online music sales game, Kmart Corp. Monday launched its own music Web site, Music Favorites.

Developed jointly with the Handleman Co., Music Favorites boasts more than 100,000 CD and cassette titles in rock, pop, urban, country, jazz alternative, classical and blues genres. Users can search for specific artists, titles or music types as well as access Real Audio clips.

"Kmart's new music Web site builds on our goal to provide online shopping destinations that offer value and respond to the interests of the online shopper at Kmart.com," said Marisha Geraghty, Kmart divisional vice president of Internet commerce. Music Favorites can also be accessed from Kmart's homepage.

The launch of Kmart's music site coincides with one of this year's most highly anticipated weeks for music sales. In this unofficial start to the holiday shopping season, albums from Jewel, Puff Daddy, Garth Brooks, Mariah Carey, Metallica and Whitney Houston go on sale Tuesday.

Kmart joins the ranks of sites such as CDnow, Amazon.com, barnesandnoble.com and N2K, all dedicated to online music sales. The competition in this particular e-commerce sector is fierce, which has led many to wonder whether some players won't be eliminated by stronger competitors.
