Wards Hires iXL for E-Commerce Services

Real world department store chain and long-time Sears rival Wards hired iXL Enterprises to move the retail brand into e-commerce.

iXL will drive the development of Wards' Internet strategy, deploying the retailer's first ever e-commerce offerings, including a jewelry site expected to be introduced mid-year, followed by a network of additional consumer goods Web properties. Spending was not disclosed.

Wards, founded in 1872 by Aaron Montgomery Ward, has 252 stores in 32 states. It currently has what amounts to a place-holder Web site.

"With this initiative, we will provide consumers with a simple, affordable and reliable shopping experience from a brand they can trust," said Roger Goddu, chairman and chief executive officer of Wards.

"Working with iXL, we will extend the Wards name beyond our brick-and-mortar stores, reaching both current customers who access the Internet and the growing number of value- and quality-conscious e-shoppers."

Consulting firm iXL offers end-to-end strategic, creative and technology solutions to businesses.
