Netscape Communications Corp. and FDX Corp. Wednesday signed a multi-year agreement designed to make it easier for consumers to ship packages.
FedEx will license Netscape's Custom Netcenter, a customized Internet portal service, to create a new online shipping site. The site will allow customers of FedEx to customize the portal to include the features they use the most.
FedEx plans to develop a new portal using the Netcenter platform. The companies are also combining to create a new service called Delivery Center that will be featured on Netscape's Netcenter portal.
Netscape and FedEx say the alliance will simplify e-commerce transactions by speeding the shipping process. Personalized package tracking will be available. Delivery Center, a standalone program that will be accessible from Netcenter, will allow customers to track packages, ship FedEx packages and obtain shipping rates.
The Delivery Center and the delivery channel will be the first of the new services to launch.
