Schaumburg, Ill.-based Motorola Inc. said it has established an alliance with Phoenix-based e-commerce infrastructure company EPIC Systems Inc. to create an Open Buying on the Internet (OBI) compliant catalog as part of its new e-commerce platform.

Motorola, which earlier this week announced that its PCS sector will reduce its global workforce by approximately 7,000 additional jobs, said its e-commerce offering will be upgraded through a collaborative effort with EPIC.

Financial arrangements between the companies were not disclosed. A Motorola spokeswoman told internetnews.com that the e-commerce platform effort is a new business for the company, with marketing aimed at international companies seeking to set up B2B electronic supply chain marketplaces.

Motorola said its e-commerce solution is an "open" software platform that enables users "to take advantage of a complete integrated electronic commerce process with participants from different industries."

The catalog aspect will assist buyers and sellers by offering an electronic procurement resource, reducing the cost of entry for companies that want to expedite their participation in electronic procurement, the company said.

"EPIC Systems Inc. will supply a critical component..." said John Cole, vice president and general manager of Motorola's Information Security Systems and Products Division.

"With EPIC Systems adding an affordable supplier catalog that employs the OBI open systems protocol, suppliers can for the first time economically deploy an e-catalog that broadens their reach into the global B2B community through Motorola's e-Commerce," said David Liggett, senior vice president of EPIC Systems.
