Lycos Content Added To Lotus Upgrade

Lycos Inc. and Lotus Development Corp. Monday struck a deal to embed the Lycos Internet tools and content into the upgrade to Lotus Notes Release 5, bringing the Lycos Network to an estimated 37 million Lotus Notes users.

LotusNotes' welcome page will offer users localized news and information for each country where it has an established presence, and the upgrade will be distributed in several language versions. Shipment is expected to begin in July.

The upgrade will link users to calendar appointments, e-mail, corporate intranets and the Internet. Through the co-branded site, users can personalize news, weather and financial information, and search the Web on the Notes desktop.

"Integration is a snap. With two mouse clicks any Notes Release 5 user can make Lycos part of their daily starting point," said Eileen Rudden, senior vice president of Lotus' Communications products division.

The Lotus deal will also include Lycos Bertelsmann in Europe and Lycos Japan. Lycos is a unit of IBM Corp.
