Computer Associates, Red Hat Deliver Management Tools

Computer Associates International Inc. Wednesday forged a sales deal with Red Hat Inc. to have its enterprise management solutions delivered with the open source provider's Linux enterprise series.

The companies' goal is to offer a Linux-based management solution packaged for small- and medium-sized businesses. With the agreement, Red Hat (RHAT) will fulfill orders through its Web site, channel partners and through telesales campaigns. CA (CA) and Red Hat will co-market the solution and conduct training through joint product seminars, channel programs and education courses.

In turn, CA's direct sales organization will sell Red Hat's enterprise support agreements to Unicenter TNG clients. The companies hope their clients will benefit from CA's IT applications running on Red Hat's Linux enterprise series.

A recent MERIT survey revealed that 48 percent of enterprise customers view Linux as an important component to their enterprise IT strategy for 2000.

"Linux needs the same level of system management capabilities as Unix if it is to emerge as a leading platform for mission-critical applications," said Bill Claybrook, Aberdeen Group's Linux research director. With CA's industry-leading expertise in enterprise management solutions and Red Hat's leverage as the leading Linux distributor, Linux users will now be able to expand their portfolio of enterprise applications."

On Monday, Red Hat and IBM (IBM) inked a deal for Red Hat to provide support for users of the IBM Java Technology as they create and deploy Java-based Internet solutions on Red Hat Linux.
