Network firm Internet Security Systems Inc. Tuesday added a new product to its SAFEsuite line of security assessment and intrusion detection systems.
System Scanner 1.0 for Windows provides host-based security assessment for both desktops and servers within a Windows environment. It utilizes a comprehensive database of system security tests to audit designated servers and desktops and identify weaknesses that could be exploited to gain unauthorized access to the system.
The utility checks system characteristics including file permissions, login permissions, registry settings, user and group passwords and user-related security risks, such as the use of uncertain active content (Java and Active-X technologies) settings or the use of dial-in modems that may bypass the organization's firewall.
"The effectiveness of an organization's security is dependent on the awareness of security weaknesses across all systems and network devices," said Ted Doty, product manager of ISS' security assessment technology.
"With more and more customers placing critical data on Windows-based systems, ISS is addressing the need of securing critical data in all areas of the enterprise network."
System Scanner carries a single-server suggested retail price of $695 and a 10-server license suggested retail price of $6,250. A single desktop license costs $50 and a 10-desktop license retails for $450.
