CheckFree Expands Billing in New England Utility Market

CheckFree Corp. and Northeast Utilities (NU), New England's largest electric utility, partnered to make electronic billing and payment services available to more than 1.3 million customers of NU subsidiaries the Connecticut Light and Power Company (CL&P) and Western Massachusetts Electric Co. (WMECO).

Service to 400,000 more customers through another NU subsidiary, Public Service Company of New Hampshire (PSNH), will begin in June 2000.

NU signed to use CheckFree E-Bill, a fully integrated electronic billing and payment solution for customers using a variety of online financial services providers, including both banks and brokerages.

Once enrolled, NU customers receive one final paper bill by mail and then all future bills electronically. Customers can then view their bill on demand, review current and outstanding account balances and access full bill detail from their personal computer. Financial terms between the companies were not disclosed.

CheckFree (CKFR) has multi-year contracts with 89 of the nation's top billers to provide online billing and payment through its network of partnerships with more than 100 consumer service providers (CSPs), including banks, brokerage firms, Internet portals and content sites, and personal financial management (PFM) software.
