Is Dell Mulling a Tablet PC?

HardwareCentral looks at a new entrant in the category of rumored tablet PCs: Dell. While speculation over the existence of Apple's so-called "iTablet" has stolen many of the headlines in recent months, the Cupertino, Calif. Mac maker may be face competition from Dell's own Android-based model -- if all the rumors are accurate.

Vendor interest in the tablet market continues to build, even before any real signs of widespread consumer demand. The latest entrant is rumored to be Dell, with a gadget blog claiming that a device is coming soon.

Pocket Lint, which is based in the U.K., cited several sources claiming that Dell (NASDAQ: DELL) will come out with an Android-powered tablet at next month's Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas. If so, it would be one of many, as this year's CES is expected to see a flood of Android products.

The rumored tablet wouldn't be too much of a stretch for Dell, notes Rob Enderle, principal analyst with the Enderle Group, since it already has an Android phone project going, and it had been developing an MP3 player, though the device never came to market. So there is plenty of knowledge and talent within Dell that can be repurposed.
