Motorola's New SMS is Interoperable

Motorola's Global Telecom Solutions Sector (GTSS) is rolling out its Motorola Short Messaging Service (SMS) Gateway, which provides inter-carrier SMS operability solutions.

Motorola's SMS Gateway provides interoperability for messaging between the majority of wireless messaging technology networks, including Code Division Multiple Access (CDMA), Global System for Mobile (GSM) communications, General Packet Radio Service (GPRS) and Time Division Multiple Access (TDMA).

Not only can operators now provide inter-carrier SMS, they can offer messaging services over their own networks, if those networks use more than one wireless technology.

"With the gateway acting as a link for short message services, operators can more easily launch value-added services, thereby increasing the operator's revenue opportunities," said Mark Borota, senior vice president and general manager of the Wireless Systems Group in Motorola's GTSS.

Motorola's SMS Gateway is built on the technology of Motorola's Short Message Service Center (SMSC), which offers short messaging, digital paging and voice mail/fax notification to SMS-capable handsets used for making wireless phone calls. Motorola's SMSC also handles input, collection, storage, management and forwarding of text messages and e-mails for delivery to subscriber handsets.

The SMSC can interface between multiple intelligent messaging peripherals and devices, such as voice mail systems, wireless Internet gateways, instant messaging servers, chat servers, information servers and fax storage devices.
