One pundit compared the arrival of a new handset on a network as "giving birth," and, like birth, something that can be a messy process.

"New technology is never introduced to the world without some kind of speed bumps along the way," Carmi Levy, senior VP, strategic consulting, AR Communications, told InternetNews.com.

"We still don't have a smoking gun in the iPhone service disruption issue. But when the truth comes out, don't be surprised if the root cause ends up being related to how all the different parts work together," he said.

The fact that RIM may be suspending the Bold launch until its 3G issues are solved is an interesting development, said Levy, and represents a smart move on RIM's part.

"If you're a carrier watching AT&T's experience now, take away one thing from this: avoid learning on the backs of your customers," said Levy.

"By the time you go live, you should have already anticipated every reasonable possibility. Of course, the unexpected will still happen. But the better prepared you are by end-to-end scenario testing, the more you can tilt the odds in your favor," said the analyst.
