Verisign Details Rising Demand for Domain Names

Having a website is no longer a luxury for businesses and organizations of all types, but a necessity. Add to that the huge increase in personal websites and the solid growth in new domain names is easy to understand.

The latest report by VeriSign puts the total number of domain registrations at 196.3 million. But as Enterprise Networking Planet details, that growth is not uniform in all geographies. Regulatory issues have also been a factor, particularly in China.

The article also includes an update on the state of DNS, which VeriSign helps to administer in the root zone of the Internet.

The demand for Internet Top Level Domain (TLD) names continues to grow. VeriSign's (NASDAQ:VRSN) Domain Name Industry Brief report for the second quarter of 2010 released this week, pegs the total number of domain registrations across all TLDs to be 196.3 million.

That total represents a 7 percent year-over-year increase from the first quarter of 2010. Digging into the numbers, ccTLDs now total 76.3 million domains names, a 2.5 percent increase on a yearly basis. Registration for .com and .net domains grew at a faster rate with a 13 percent year-over-year increase.
