Shredder 2.0 Shreds Files In Real Time

Stratfor Systems introduced Shredder 2.0, a new version of its file deletion software.

Available for Windows 95, 98 and NT, Shredder 2.0 operates in real time, ensuring that files are unrecoverable as soon as the user deletes them.

Shredder tracks the creation and deletion of all files on the computer, including temporary files that are generated by the operating system. It erases deleted data within the Swap file (in Windows 95 and 98) and Pagefile (in Windows NT). As the vendor points out, these files contain copies of everything the user has worked on, including passwords and encryption keys.

Shredder 2.0 also functions as an Internet security product, allowing the user to shred records of Internet activity by overwriting the history, cache and cookie files on shutdown. With Shredder installed, there need be no trace of Web activity remaining on the hard drive.

"While going about its business in the background, Shredder 2.0 overwrites deleted files, ensuring that commonly available sector editors and undelete programs cannot unearth the files," the company explained in a statement.

Earlier this month, Shredder 2.0 successfully completed the U.S. Air Force product assessment program. It is also compliant with Department of Defense requirements for clearing and sanitizing sensitive automated information from magnetic media.

The cost of the Shredder 2.0 is $99.95.
