Inktomi Corp. Thursday launched its search operations in Europe by signing four European customers.

British ISP LineOne (a venture between BT and United News and Media), Swedish newspaper Dagens Nyheter, new media firm Hollinger Digital (UK Max) and Spain's Telefonica all will integrate Inktomi's search facilities into their online content in the next few weeks.

The European version of the search will offer access to approximately 50 million documents indexed from European and global Web sites. Combined with other documents from the United States, the service reportedly will provide search coverage of more than 150 million Web pages.

Along with the search facilities, Inktomi said its European customers will have access to real-time language translation services via Inktomi's partnership with WorldBlaze.

The European expansion is part of Inktomi's strategy to offer its services worldwide, according to David Peterschmidt, Intkomi's president and chief executive officer.

"Inktomi's mission is to provide software infrastructure that powers the major Internet companies worldwide," he said. "The combination of our global search coverage and deep technology uniquely positions Inktomi to power the exploding growth of the ISP and portal markets in Europe."
