Netcom Feels the Heat

The recent heat wave affecting the eastern part of the country caused problems for people without air conditioning and Internet service providers, particularly Netcom.
Because of a forced power company shut-down to all non-emergency facilities, a point-of-presence (POP) in Newark, NJ lost power as of 5:30 a.m. EDT Wednesday morning. The facility provides service to a wide area including New Jersey, New York and Pennsylvania. There was no word on the actual number of customers who were inconvenienced.
A MindSpring spokesman said that most service has since been restored as of 10 a.m. EDT and the only customers that remain without access are subscribers in the Pennington, NJ, White Plains, NY, and Wilkes Barre, Penn. areas.
