Cable & Wireless Adds Inktomi Technology

Cable & Wireless USA Monday licensed caching technology from Inktomi Corp. to more efficiently handle traffic on its servers and network.

Cable & Wireless USA, which recently took over MCI's consumer Internet business, is planning to deploy Inktomi's Traffic Server to enhance its Internet Shock Absorber content distribution and management.

Traffic Server and ISA work together to optimize data storage and transfer, allowing Cable & Wireless customers to more quickly and efficiently access the Web. Traffic Server also contains software that will allow Cable & Wireless to deliver advanced Web content to customers.

Cable & Wireless said Traffic Server will allow its commercial customers to offer multimedia content and stage special events without investing in new hardware or additional bandwidth. Traffic Server supports streaming media caching and has other advanced features. The system also supports all Internet protocols.

"Internet Shock Absorber is ideally suited for customers who have Web sites that are rich in graphics, audio and video content," said Tom Malone, Cable & Wireless' president of commercial Internet and messaging services.

"Inktomi Traffic Servers robust performance and feature set made it the strategic, scalable choice for us to deploy value-added services throughout our global network."
