A symbiotic relationship has developed between Symbian and Opera Software, as the two companies have announced an agreement to include Opera as the default browser in Symbian's reference designs for Communicator devices.
Opera increases its Internet penetration with the deal, which will see Opera across a range of pocket-sized devices. Symbian's reference designs for Communicators will see different pen- and keyboard-based devices developed by Licensees.
The Nokia 9210 Communicator, available later this year, will be the first of the bunch.
"We're moving into a market where for millions of users their first experience of accessing the Internet will be from a mobile device, said Mark Edwards, executive vice president of sales and marketing at Symbian. "To offer mobile users a compelling multimedia experience we've been evaluating a number of browsers to complement the Symbian OS...With this agreement Symbian and Opera will ensure that future browsing requirements will be easily and seamlessly incorporated into the Symbian OS."
