Mobile Surges, But What's the Impact on IT?

Mobile vendors are enjoying unprecedented sales levels on both the consumer and enterprise side. The big plus for users, is more flexible access to applications and services from anywhere they can make an Internet connection to. For IT departments the trend is not necessarily great news, as these new devices bring with them new deployment, security and support challenges.

SD Forum took a look at the "Mobile Internet Tsunami" phenomena during a one day conference. As Enterprise Mobile Today reports, panelists were bullish on mobile's potential, but also detailed key challenges facing IT departments and the companies and early adopters that hope to win them over.


MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif. – Mobile devices and the flood of new mobile applications presents both opportunities and challenges for those looking to push through new mobile initiatives in the enterprise, said panelists here at the Mobile Internet Tsunami conference held Friday at Microsoft's (NASDAQ: MSFT) Silicon Valley research campus.

"The mobile apps industry is growing at a pace we haven't seen since the dotcom era, said SAP (NYSE: SAP)," executive Kevin Nix, noting recent industry estimates put the number of mobile apps at over 350,000, a number forecast to grow to 1.5 million by 2014.
