MDaemon Messaging Server Helps SMBs

The Windows-based MDaemon messaging server is now available in a new version that's designed specifically for small businesses. Called MDaemon Messaging Server BlackBerry Edition, it provides email, calendar and contact management.

The new version, being rolled out by ALT-N Technologies, which is a subsidiary of Research In Motion (NASDAQ: RIMM), can be installed on servers that run Windows 7 and earlier versions of the operating system, or on computers running Windows XP.

It helps IT supervise BlackBerry smartphones by offering IT management and policy controls for the handsets, as well as a number of contact, email and calendar tools.

News of the SMB version of the MDaemon messaging server comes at a time when RIM is expanding beyond its core of enterprise services for businesses using BlackBerrys.High on that list of new ventures is the upcoming release of the tablet PC, the BlackBerry PlayBook.

The company is also expanding its line of mobile operating systems, with the QNX-based tablet OS, and is working to improve its mobile experience using technology from UI design firm The Astonishing Tribe, which it recently acquired.

There's also more news for BlackBerry users: RIM released a beta update to Twitter for BlackBerry. New features include geotagging, social feed integration and retweet update functionality.
