Cirrus Buys WLAN Vendor

Digital signal processing chipmaker Cirrus Logic Inc. (Nasdaq:CRUS) said Wednesday that it is buying ShareWave Inc., a developer of wireless home networking technology.

Cirrus Logic said it will pay about $92 million for ShareWave. The boards of both companies have approved the transaction. ShareWave's technology has been employed by a number of home networking vendors including Netgear and Panasonic.

ShareWave is the developer of Whitecap technology, which is based on IEEE 802.11 standards and, like other 802.11b products, it delivers speeds of 11Mbps. However, it also uses elements of technology incorporated into the 802.11e standard draft specification that delivers quality of service capabilities needed to transmit multimedia throughout the home.

"This is another step in the realization of our vision by establishing a strong home networking technology presence," said David D. French, president and CEO of Cirrus Logic.

ShareWave's technology has been employed by a number of home networking vendors including Netgear and Panasonic.
