Microsoft's Charney Urges Holistic Security

Ask Scott Charney about effective cybersecurity, and he'll tell you that it takes a village.

Charney, corporate vice president of Microsoft's Trustworthy Computing division, outlined a vision of a "global Internet health model" at this year's RSA security conference, calling for all stakeholders, from governments to businesses to consumers, to work together to address cybercrime and other online blights.

"Security is not a problem that can be addressed fully by individual consumers, or even individual companies or governments. That is what led to the development of my public health model proposal, which calls for collective defense against cyber threats," he said.

In fact, Charney first outlined his Internet heath model in October, but carried the message with him the RSA show, a prominent forum for security policy discussions and product releases.

Datamation reports on Charney's message, and how he envisions balancing tighter security with concerns of personal privacy.
