OpenStack, originally a joint venture of NASA and Rackspace, is gaining momentum.
The project is out with its latest release this week, dubbed Bexar, drawing new support from Cisco and Ubuntu Linux, building on the original contributions of some 35 technology vendors.
Additionally, the new Bexar offering includes preliminary support for a technology called Glance, which OpenStack is marshaling to bind its cloud computing, provisioning engines and storage systems together.
"Glance is an image management service," said Jonathan Bryce, chairman of the OpenStack project oversight committee. "So when you want to take a snapshot of a running virtual machine and then store it somewhere for backup, or want the ability to provision a number of copies of it, then Glance is the technology that does that."
