Microsoft Refreshes App Virtualization Offering

Microsoft is again trying to ease the path for IT managers to press ahead with the migration to Windows 7.

The software giant has begun shipping two updated tools within its Microsoft Desktop Optimization Pack (MDOP) that offer support for virtualizing applications in Windows.

The tools, dubbed App-V 4.6 and Microsoft Enterprise Desktop Virtualization (MED-V) 2.0, are now available, with the former offering what the company calls "package accelerators."

"Package Accelerators give IT pros and ISVs a way to convert traditional applications directly into App-V," said Microsoft's Gavriella Schuster. "Basically, it speeds up application packaging and App-V deployment, making the move to Windows 7 all the more easier."

Datamation reports on the new tools, and what administrators sitting on the fence about the Windows 7 transition can expect.
