Apple's launch of its OS X 10.9 operating system, known as Mavericks, on Oct. 22 follows the company's 10.8 Mountain Lion release in 2012 and is the first Apple Mac OS X version not named after a feline species. The Mavericks launch also breaks from its predecessors in that it is the first OS X release that is being made freely available to existing Apple users.
Just because the release is free, doesn't mean that Apple is skimping on new features.
