EMC Buys Itself Some Data Protection 'WysDM'

Purchase of data protection management firm is storage titan's fourth acquisition this year.

April 4, 2008
By Judy Mottl: More stories by this author:

EMC confirmed today that it has acquired WysDM, a seven-year-old data protection management provider, for an undisclosed amount.

The storage giant didn't provide many details on today's news, its fourth acquisition of the year, but did say the deal is not expected to have a material impact on revenues or earnings-per-share for 2008.

WysDM's CEO Alan Atkinson was not as subdued. He is "psyched" about the venture as it will allow the NewYork-based privately held company an opportunity to "move to the next level."

"We are jazzed. We are already aligned and we are just going to keep growing thanks to EMC's resources," Atkinson told InternetNews.com.

The company, which has 40 employees, has been an EMC OEM reseller for three years, selling WysDM for Backups 4 software under the EMC Backup Advisor line.

WysDM will become a part of EMC's Information Management Software Group (IMSG) within EMC's Storage Division. Atkinson will report directly to Mark Sorenson, senior vice president of IMSG.

One analyst said the acquisition will provide enterprise customers "exactly what they're looking for," with a storage and security services strategy, and cements EMC's back-up and recovery product portfolio.

"EMC doesn't have to start from scratch, either with a technology or with building a customer base," Charles King, principal analyst, Pund-IT, told InternetNews.com. "This fits very well within their service strategy evolution and presents WysDM an opportunity to advance its technology. They should make beautiful music together."

Earlier this year EMC acquired Document Sciences, Pi and Infra. It is currently wooing disk drive maker Iomega.

According to an IDC 2007 storage report, EMC is leading the market in the data protection and recovery software segment -- growing 18.9 percent in 2007 as compared to the market growth of 10.3 percent.
