New Public Cloud Storage Services Target IT

Cloud computing is all the rage. Salesforce built a billion dollar business based on cloud services and companies like Google, IBM and Microsoft are firmly on the bandwagon. There are also a range of public and private cloud services as well as hybrid options.

A less heralded aspect of cloud computing is storage. Datamation reports on recent advances that promise to make public cloud storage services especially appealing to IT shops looking for cheaper alternatives to traditional onsite storage solutions. The new public cloud services also are simpler to manage.

Public cloud storage services are fast becoming a more attractive option for the enterprise, according to a new report by research firm Ovum.

In its "Clouds Open for Enterprise Storage" report, Ovum said that a new generation of services is emerging in public clouds that can handle live data generated by applications running on customers' premises. These storage services are designed to be used separately from other cloud services and are attractively priced compared to traditional, on-premises storage systems.
