Nortel Networks and EMC today announced they plan to demonstrate what they say is the industry's first networked storage solution capable of accessing the speed and capacity of the optical network 'on demand' at SUPERCOMM.
"We are driving a significant disruption in optical and storage networking," said Anil Khatod, chief marketing and strategy officer, Nortel Networks. "One of the significant obstacles to moving large amounts of information across long distance has been the cost of establishing a network robust enough to handle the load and flexible enough to provide access to the bandwidth when and as needed. Today, we are addressing that by integrating optical intelligence with storage networking for storage bandwidth on demand."
According to the companies, the solution is ideal for large files that need to pass over the wide area network at high speeds, such as a Los Angeles movie studio distributed a digital feature from a storage system in California to storage systems in theaters around the world over an intelligent optical network.
