ICTV Thursday introduced Digital Lite, a low-cost, upgradeable headend solution for Internet e-mail and basic interactive content like local weather, traffic advisory, sport scores, personalized stock quotes and news. Aside from e-mail, system capabilities include Web page broadcasting, "Walled" interactive content, operator-generated customer HTML content and VOD user interface.

Digital Lite is designed to meet the needs of MSOs that prefer to begin roll out of ITV services with limited, entry level offerings to consumers. ICTV said Digital Lite will work on any set top box and requires no special software or middleware. The company said operators will gain revenue generating potential while providing customers with broadband functionality.

With a one-time capital equipment cost that is the equivalent of $25-35 per subscriber for the average system, the Digital Lite system will provide interactive capabilities at a nominal price point. The system can be upgraded to a full implementation of ICTV's digital broadband capabilities, including Internet browsing, full streaming media and access to CD-ROM based applications.

"Many operators want to take a gradual approach to the construction of their new ITV business," said Michael Collette, senior vice president of marketing for ICTV. "Digital Lite was developed to support this strategy. It offers the lowest initial price point available for an ITV system and is completely future proof. All of the Digital Lite assets extend to support a full-blown ICTV Digital platform for the high end, streaming media future that we all believe is on the horizon."
