The Java Media Framework 2.0 (JMF) technology was created for the playback, synchronization, capture, transmission and transcoding of media across most major operating systems. Sun and IBM developed the API to help developers more effectively evaluate new and upgraded technologies.

JMF 2.0 API provides Java developers with advanced media processing capabilities, including media capture, compression and transmission, along with support for media types and codecs such as MP3, Flash, Real-time Transport Protocol and Real-time Streaming Protocol (RTP/RTSP), IBM's HotMedia, and Beatnik's Rich Media Format (RMF). The new technology also supports media types such as QuickTime, Microsoft's AVI format, and MPEG-1, and includes an open media architecture that enables developers to access and manipulate the various components of the media playback and capture process.

The new JMF 2.0 technology can be utilized in both Java applications and applets, and will operate in Java-enabled Web browsers such as Netscape Communicator and Microsoft Internet Explorer. The technology can be pre-installed on the client system or dynamically downloaded, providing an opportunity to create unique media solutions that match the developer's individual needs.

JMF 2.0 technology will be available in four different versions, with optimized powerpacks for Solaris- and Microsoft Windows-based Web servers.
