Digital Airways said Wednesday that is shipping its Wapaka Wireless Application Protocol (WAP) microbrowser, written in Java, for Palm devices.

The microbrowser is based on Sun Microsystems' Connected Limited Device Configuration (CLDC) specifications, the company said. It said a version for Pocket PC handhelds will be available soon.

The microbrowser supports multiple open windows. It works with a variety of communications technologies such as GSM and Bluetooth, and can easily be extended by developers to i-mode and xHTML, according to Digital Airways.

The browser can be used as an off-the-shelf application by consumers, although the company said it was designed for information technology (IT) departments and for device and application vendors. An evaluation can be downloaded directly from the company's Web site.
