Comverse Wins Contract, Intros Platform

Comverse Technology a maker of hardware and software for mobile carriers, announced a new customer in Asia-Pacific and unveiled a new technology platform.

The contract comes from Taiwanese mobile operator MoBiTai. Specifically, the deal includes Comverse's Multimedia Messaging Service Center (MMSC) and Mobile Data Gateway (MDG). Financial terms were not disclosed.

"(The win) emphasizes that our platform is configurable, open and flexible, and strengthens Comverse's position as a leading mobile data provider," Comverse CEO Zeev Bregman said. "Taiwan is a powerhouse in the Asia-Pacific region, and a leader in providing a range of advanced mobile services.

While wireless carriers in the United States are just beginning to push mobile messaging, the service has already taken hold in Asia-Pacific, where the need for faster data transfers is driving demand for new equipment.

In other news, the Woodbury, N.Y., company announced the availability of InSight, its new open, value-added services environment that helps carriers roll out new services. The offering is in trials with wireline and wireless service providers in Europe and North America.

InSight integrates disparate messaging and communication platforms including voicemail, e-mail, instant communications and multimedia messaging into a single architecture, which can reduce service and other costs, the company said.

It is aimed at service providers, who can incrementally integrate the components according to their needs. System consolidation, footprint reduction and centralized management are other selling points, Comverse said.

InSight is available to new customers as a complete system and to current Comverse customers as an incremental upgrade that built upon their existing gear. Pricing information was not immediately available.
