OzEmail to Offer Satellite Internet in Australia

Asia Pacific Internet service provider OzEmail Ltd. will soon begin trials of high-speed, direct-to-home satellite Internet services, with support from regional pay-TV provider AUSTAR.

The service is designed for Internet content to be delivered via the same satellite service that provides AUSTAR customers with pay-TV content. The service will allow Internet subscribers to achieve download speeds significantly faster than currently available via conventional dial-up PSTN connections.

"The trial will allow us to determine the optimal technology and content mix and how we can most efficiently provide high-speed Internet access across the vast Australian landscape," said Sean Howard, chief executive officer of OzEmail.

"For OzEmail, the satellite trial represents another stage in the development of a more compelling service offering for customers by merging the delivery of pay-TV and Internet access."

The trials are expected to begin by year's end.

The Australian ISP has been rumored to be the target of a takeover bid by either America Online Inc or Cable & Wireless Optus Ltd., although the companies refuse to comment.
