Optus Announces Global IP Availability

[Sydney, AUSTRALIA] Cable & Wireless Optus has completed the Australian link to its parent company's global Internet protocol (IP) network.

C&W Optus said the opening of the Southern Cross Cable Network joint venture - expected to take place tomorrow - would allow Australian businesses to enjoy a direct connection with global business centres through the global.net IP network.

The link will offer increased speed for multinational corporations, Application Service Providers (ASPs), content providers, carriers and Internet Service Providers (ISPs).

"With global.net, we can now offer Australian businesses increased speed and the same guaranteed quality of service that their U.S. counterparts receive - the highest service level guarantees in the industry," said C&W Optus' chief executive officer Chris Anderson.

The C&W Optus backbone is a single logical IP network operating at speeds of up to 9.6Gbps. The carrier holds a a 40 percent stake in the Southern Cross high-speed cable which will link the United States, Australia, New Zealand and Fiji.
