Borders.com Launches Newsstand

Ann Arbor, Mich.-based Internet bookstore Borders.com did a partner deal with MegaMags Inc. and launched an online magazine newsstand offering 21,000 titles.

Borders.com is the online subsidiary of bookstore company Borders Group Inc. . MegaMags is a closely held Minneapolis-based B2B e-commerce company that creates custom magazine newsstands for Internet operations.

Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed. MegaMags said it is making available "every magazine available for single-issue sale in the United States."

The magazines will be available in single copies and back issues as well as by subscription, Borders.com said. The title base ranges from the well-known such as the Reader's Digest, Family Circle, Newsweek and Glamour to esoteric publications including Yoga Journal, Pen World, UFO, American Cheerleader and New Zealand Quilter.

Also available are more than 750 foreign language magazine titles available in French, Italian, Spanish, Russian and German. There are also more than 350 British magazines available. Single-copy orders placed by 2 p.m. CST weekdays are shipped the same day, Borders.com said.

Competitor Barnes and Noble.com also has a magazine store (Amazon.com apparently does not), and currently is offering a promotion consisting of a "risk-free" 90-day subscription to about 1,000 titles.

"Borders prides itself on the deep selection of in-store periodicals. We're excited to offer the same quality of service and magazine options online," said Bob Edington, director of online operations.
