Sun Microsystems Inc. Thursday revealed its intentions to expand the deployment of Inktomi Corp.'s Search Software across its intranet, extranet and public sites.
Inktomi said Sun would use its platform to manage searches of more than 40 million documents and 30,000 servers worldwide.
"Our network is very demanding and requires incredible scale and flexibility from an enterprise search software product," said Bill Howard, senior vice president and chief information officer of Sun. "Inktomi Search Software provides the extensive capabilities we need for our growing network, while requiring minimal IT maintenance and administrative effort."
Sun initially deployed the platform in 1997, when it covered more than one million documents and 2,000 servers.
Sun also said that the enhanced language capabilities of Inktomi's platform has lead it to consider a build out of its intranet to include an Asian-specific search cluster to augment European and U.S. operations.
