Microsoft had acknowledged that its Windows Phone 7 handsets were dealing with a gremlin that had been driving up the data consumption rates for some users, but only described the issue as relating to an unidentified third-party app.
Until now. Microsoft has confirmed that the problem stems from Yahoo's Webmail application, noting that a slim portion of users have seen their data usage soar because of a glitch in the program.
"We have determined that an inefficiency exists in the synchronization of e-mail between the Windows Phone Mail client and Yahoo Mail," a Microsoft spokesman said. "This inefficiency can result in larger than expected data usage for a very small percentage of users."
Microsoft explains that it is working with Yahoo to develop a patch to fix the synchronization error to address the unwarranted data transfers, due out in the coming weeks.
