Nokia, Microsoft Shoring Up Mobile Alliance

Despite a bit of controversy, Microsoft and Nokia are wasting no time forging their new alliance in an effort to improve their respective standings in the fiercely competitive mobile space.

Nokia is urging third-party mobile app developers to support the newly inked deal that calls for the Finnish handset maker's smartphones to run on Microsoft's new mobile OS, Windows Phone 7.

Both Microsoft (NASDAQ: MSFT) and Nokia (NYSE: NOK) have an interest in maintaining relevance in the mobile sector, which has experienced explosive growth in the past two years as tablets and handsets running Google's (NASDAQ: GOOG) Android OS enter the market once dominated by Apple (NASDAQ: AAPL) and Research In Motion (NASDAQ: RIMM).
