Altera Helps INRANGE Break the SAN Barrier

Altera Corporation today announced today that INRANGE Technologies has selected Altera system-on-a-programmable chip (SOPC) products for use in its unique Extended Credit Addressing Facility (XCAF(TM)) technology.
According to the companies, INRANGE's storage area network (SAN) products make it possible to access data over great distances. Prior to the introduction of XCAF, 10 kilometers was the distance limitation between devices in a SAN. XCAF allows any port in INRANGE's industry-leading FC/9000(TM) Fibre Channel Director to communicate with any other port in a SAN over 100 kilometers.
Jay Morris, director of sourcing and supplier development for INRANGE, explained their device selection criteria, "We considered devices from all of the leading programmable logic suppliers. Altera provided the best combination of value, performance, device utilization, and support for this project. Further, the availability of APEX(TM) 20KE devices in compact FineLine BGA(TM) packages meant that we could minimize board space and maximize our cost effectiveness."
