MedUnite has selected Computer Sciences Corporation (CSC) to play a leading role in the company’s effort to create an online commerce solution that connects health care payers and providers.

MedUnite is a San Diego-based service company founded and developed by leading health plans such as Aetna, Cigna, PacifiCare, and WellPoint Health Networks to reduce administrative inefficiencies in the trillion dollar U.S. health care market by using Internet technology.

Under the terms of the five-year agreement, CSC will serve as MedUnite’s information technology support contractor and systems integrator. CSC will provide business process engineering, change management, and health care and technology consulting services. CSC will also be responsible for management of all vendors and selected subcontractors.

The system, which will be operational later this year, is designed for physicians and other health care providers to connect in real time to payers in order to perform routine administrative transactions.

Using a standard Internet browser, physicians and other providers will be able to submit claims, check on claim status, verify patient eligibility and benefits, and obtain referrals and authorizations.

Other members of MedUnite’s technology team include Deloitte Consulting, Sun Microsystems, and XCare.net.

With last year’s revenues at approximately $9.9 billion, CSC has been recognized by Healthcare Information Executives Magazine as one of the most influential forces in health care information technology. The company is headquartered in El Segundo, California.
