Cable ISP WorldGate
Communications Inc. and communications firm General Instrument Corp.(GI) have partnered
to put WorldGate’s Internet TV Over Cable service on GI’s
digital set-top terminals.
The service, currently deployed on GI’s analog terminals,
provides Internet access through television sets at up to 128 kilobits per
second. GI’s partnership with WorldGate will increase that speed to 27
Mbps.
The WorldGate platform in the GI box allows third-party applications, such
as video-on-demand, enhanced
broadcasting and other related services over WorldGate’s service.
“WorldGate is proud to be the first company to bring the high-speed
Internet access now available only to PC owners to the television set,”
said Hal Krisbergh, chairman and CEO of WorldGate Communications.
