MSP Association Grows to 100 Members

Last week the Management Service Provider association (MSP) held its second quarterly meeting in Chicago to discuss plans and activities for 2001, as well as having presentations by guest speakers Corey Ferengul of the META Group, on market trends, and Ian Clayton of IT Service Management Institute, on Service Level Agreements.

Important stuff for an industry association, born in June 2000, to serve companies that deliver information technology (IT) infrastructure management services to businesses, IT organizations and other service providers.

But maybe not as important as what they have achieved in less than a year–growing their membership to 100.

“Hitting the 100-member mark in eight months is a great achievement for
us,” said Linda Shannon-Hills, chairperson of the MSP Association. “The
growing membership demonstrates that the Association is successfully meeting
its goal of providing a defining voice and leadership in the emerging
management service industry.”

Shannon-Hills said the Chicago meeting provided an opportunity for members in a rapidly growing association to have some face to face contact. “The meeting also gives our members a chance to mentor one another as well.”

The Association’s founding members include 2ndWave, Inc.; Candle
Corporation; Entuity, Inc.; HP OpenView (NYSE: HWP); InteQ Corporation;
iSharp; Luminate;; (Nasdaq: MCAF); NCMX, Inc.; Nuclio
Corporation; SilverBack Technologies, Inc.; SiteLite, Inc.; siteROCK
Corporation; Storability, Inc.; and TriActive, Inc.

The newest members include eight who have joined at the Executive level of
membership, and fifteen at the Associate level.

International membership is approximately 20 percent, from countries such as Brazil, Canada, India, Israel, Japan, Korea, Singapore and UK. Shannon-Hills hasn’t been surprized at the level of international interest, however. “The MSP industry is one of the tech sectors that are not verticalized, nor regionalized. It is a high tech area that is truly global,” she said.

MSPs have existed for years, but only recently have they assumed the name; however, their need in the marketplace has always been evident.

Said Corey Ferengul, senior program director of the META Group, “MSPs have arisen because [IT] is an area of failures. Several years ago, there was a 60-70% failure rate. The bottom line is that MSPs make your [IT systems] work for you.”

The META Group estimates the MSP market at about 10 billion by 2004. “If you include network managed services, content management, and security services, it may already be there,” he added.
