Continuing to take aim at Citrix MetaFrame, New Moon Systems Inc. yesterday announced the release of Canaveral iQ version 1.5, a server-based computing software platform designed to deploy and manage Windows applications across private and public networks.
Canaveral iQ works in conjunction with Microsoft Terminal Services to provide a server-based computing environment. In contrast to market leader Citrix, who uses its proprietary ICA (Independent Computing Architecture) protocol as the delivery mechanism, Canaveral iQ relies on Microsoft’s Remote Desktop Protocol (RDP) protocol for delivery. New Moon adds its own management layer on top of that as Citrix does with MetaFrame.
According to New Moon, Canaveral iQ version 1.5 adds new features such as push-client install, desktop shortcuts and automatic form population. New Moon’s software automatically populates forms like drop-down server start menus to help IT managers adds servers and deploy and upgrade applications.
Canaveral iQ 1.5 also supports embedded NT and Windows CE devices on the client side, New Moon reports, allowing customers to deploy Windows-based terminals with New Moon Canaveral iQ. This is designed, the company says, to both protect an enterprise’s original investment and expand the thin-client computing market.
Canaveral iQ is also designed to improve efficiency, according to New Moon, by giving IT managers the power to centrally push software to all user endpoints on the network.
“Because New Moon Canaveral iQ saves enterprises time and money, and is more tailored to the customer’s true needs than other options, we are seeing tremendous customer traction, both in the United States and internationally,” said Max R. Herrmann, vice president of marketing and strategy of New Moon Systems.
New Moon Canaveral iQ version 1.5 supports Windows 2000 or Windows NT server operating systems and is available immediately, the company reports.
