Content delivery company Sandpiper Networks, Inc. Monday announced an agreement with America Online to offer Sandpiper’s Footprint service to AOL users.

Footprint delivers Web content from a globally distributed network of ISP and major backbone servers. It is designed to avoid Internet congestion points, and ensures that content is served closer to end-users.

Under its agreement with AOL, Sandpiper will deploy its content servers across AOL’s network, enabling content to be served directly from within AOL. In addition, Sandpiper’s technology will integrate with AOL’s existing caching infrastructure. Financial terms were not disclosed.

“We are fully committed to continually enhancing the AOL experience for our members, and we believe that Sandpiper’s innovative distribution platform can help deliver high levels of performance for AOL members accessing Internet content served from Sandpiper’s content delivery network,” said Joe Barrett, AOL’s vice president of Internet operations.

Sandpiper also announced this week that it has finalized a $21.5-million round of financing involving AOL and other strategic partners including Inktomi, and Eagle New Media Investment LLC, an affiliate of Times Mirror Co.
