OASIS Forms UDDI Technical Committee

The decision to integrate the UDDI.org group with the OASIS standards consortium began to bear fruit Wednesday, as OASIS formed the
UDDI Specification Technical Committee to advance the specification.

The new committee is the first that has been formed within the OASIS UDDI Member Section, formed when UDDI.org transitioned its work to OASIS in late July.

The UDDI , or Universal Description, Discovery and Integration, specification is one of the cornerstones of Web
services, acting as a directory of available services.

“UDDI provides a foundation for the infrastructure needed to drive the success of Web services,” said Tom Bellwood of IBM , co-chair of the committee. “We are excited to begin work on standardizing the UDDI specification at OASIS, as well as
developing and organizing the best practices that relate to its use.”

The members of the committee include BEA Systems, Cincom, Computer Associates, E2open, Entrust, Fujitsu, Hewlett-Packard, IBM,
Intel, IONA, Microsoft, MSI Business Solutions, NerveWire, Novell, Oracle, Perficient, SAP, SeeBeyond, Sun Microsystems, TIBCO,
VeriSign, webMethods, XML Global and others.

Luc Clement of Microsoft will share the chair with Bellwood.

“Advancing UDDI within OASIS will help accelerate adoption and benefit the entire industry,” Clement said. “Interest from OASIS
member organizations in moving UDDI forward is high, and we look forward to input from a wide variety of companies.”

One of the committee’s first jobs is likely to include going over UDDI Version 3, which UDDI.org delivered just before the
transition to OASIS. UDDI Version 3 seemed to indicate a new thinking on the specification and how Web services work. The new
version included changes that gear UDDI for internal deployments behind the firewall, rather than as public registries that would
act as a sort of Yellow Pages for Web services — the initial concept for UDDI.

UDDI 3 includes multi-registry topologies, increased security features, improved WSDL support, a new subscription API
and core information model advances intended to offer clients and implementers a comprehensive blueprint of a description and
discovery foundation for a variety of Web services architectures.

The support for multi-registry topologies gives users the ability to take Web services registrations from a local registry and
promote them to a private or public registry. In addition, the new version of UDDI supports XML-based digital signatures and allows
UDDI operations to manage XML-based policies for improved security. Meanwhile, the new subscription API and information model allows
UDDI users to receive proactive notifications on services and changes to the UDDI registry.
