Ascend, Cisco Still Dominate Networking Segment

Things are looking rosy for network equipment vendors, according to the latest stats from Cahners In-Stat
Group
.

First-quarter revenues for networking hardware increased 20
percent over the fourth quarter of last year. Cahners attributed the strong sales growth to increased demand for virtual
private networks and private intranets.

Cisco Systems Inc. remains the leader of remote access hardware sales with more than 50 percent market share. Shiva Corp. and Nortel Networks
maintained 14 percent and 10 percent market share, respectively.

Ascend Communications, Cisco and 3com Corp. remain in a
three-way race for market share dominance in dial-up trafficking equipment. Ascend leads the market with 31 percent sales share. Cisco and 3Com ended the first quarter with 30 percent and 24 percent sales share, respectively.
