Bell Canada Invests $1.5 Billion in High-Speed Connectivity

Bell Canada Monday committed $1.5 billion over three years to fast-track its high-speed Internet access service to residential and business customers.

Bell is currently accelerating its high-speed Internet connectivity to reach five million, or over 70 percent, of its customers by year end, with a goal of 85 percent
by the end of 2002.

Bell will also invest in substantial upgrades to its access network using
optical fiber. In major urban centers optical fiber mesh networks will be
built using cables containing more than 800 fibers each.

“One of Bell’s strengths lies in the 11 million lines we have to our customers,” said Jean C. Monty, Bell Canada chairman of the board and chief executive officer.
“High speed access is a critical part of our Internet strategy that is based
on connectivity, commerce, and content. Until now the service was not
available to the majority of our customers. With this aggressive rollout, we
will remedy that this year.”

This will enable, in particular, a rapid expansion of its optical
ethernet-based Nexxia.LAN services
that provide up to a GigaBit (1000 Mbps) connectivity services for large
business customers.

Bell’s high speed Internet services are enabled by both Digital Subscriber
Line (DSL) and optical fiber technologies.
