Dell Surges Higher in PC Market Share

PC sales are growing worldwide and there’s a changing of the guard near the top spot.

HP (NYSE: HPQ) continued to boast the top spot in the latest PC sales report from IHS iSuppli for the fourth quarter of 2010, but Dell (NASDAQ: DELL) jumped back into second place, edging out Acer which fell to third. The HIS iSuppli report covers PC desktops, notebooks and netbook computers.

But the biggest winner may have been the PC industry overall as sales of new PCs hit a new high in the quarter. Total shipments calculated by IHS iSuppli, topped 93 million units, up from 88.9 million in the same quarter of 2009.

“Acer … had surged to the No. 2 spot on the strength of its strong sales of netbook PCs to consumers and a generally buoyant consumer market,” Matthew Wilkins, principal analyst for compute platforms at IHS, said in a statement. “However, with momentum for consumer PCs waning and in light of growing competition from media tablets, Acer’s gains have been reversed.”

No other competitor came close to HP, though, which shipped 18 million computers in the fourth quarter. Hardware Central has more info on the PC market share report including comments on why the corporate market is growing faster than the consumer side.
