Windows 8, already?

Though Windows 8 may still be a year or more away from being generally available, Microsoft has started sending early builds of Windows 8 to some OEM partners, according to one report.

The story broke on the WinRumors enthusiasts site, which said that the builds are being distributed via Microsoft’s (NASDAQ: MSFT) Connect, but site by invitation only.

“Microsoft is expected to be readying a Windows 8 beta for September,” WinRumors said. According to WinRumors’ sources, the current build number for the code is 7971.0.110324-1900.

Interest in Windows 8 has run high since almost before Windows 7 was released. In fact, the first leak of information about the upcoming update came just a month after Windows 7 shipped.
