For those who love to view video via their PCs, Sony Electronics Wednesday
drew the curtain on its spring 2001 lineup of digital VAIO PCs.
Starting at about $1,400, the VAIO Digital Studio desktops are equipped with
Intel Pentium 4 1.3GHz and 1.5GHz processors and Rambus memory with 400MHz.
All systems come loaded with a 10/100BaseT Ethernet, V.90 integrated modem,
two i.LINK and three USB ports, as well as Sony’s Picture Toy drawing
application and MovieShaker digital video editing software.
The new PCs focus on creativity by emphasizing digital imaging, movie
editing, video e-mail and music. As such, the DVD and CD-RW drives on the
VAIO Digital Studio series are especially strong.
Pre-loaded on all the VAIO PCs, the MovieShaker digital video editing
application simplifies the creation of digital home movie. Users can allow
MovieShaker to create an automatic digital video clip, or create his or her
own by re-arranging scenes, inserting customized text and audio and
selecting transitions. The finished movies can be transferred via compressed
e-mail attachment to a DV format and copied onto a CD-RW disc.
But users don’t have to make a movie on the new VAIOs — they can draw if so
inclined. With Picture Toy, artists can choose different brush sizes and
edit digital still images using more than 70 included images, such as
eyeglasses, mustaches flowers and starbursts.
Also, for novice computer buyers, Sony offers its PCV-J150, which for $800
features a CD-RW drive, a 30 gigabyte hard drive, a V.90 integrated modem
and a network interface card.
