The open-source MariaDB database has emerged in recent years to be a real competitor to MySQL from which it was forked. Now at long last there is a generally available version of MariaDB Enterprise edition.
Support firm SkySQL first started providing services and support for MySQL and MariaDB back in October of 2010.
SkySQL expanded its abilities in April of 2013, by merging with MariaDB. Even with that merge however, MariaDB lacked an ‘Enterprise’ version, a version of the database specifically offered to commercial customers with the capabilities they look for in typical enterprise database solutions.
That’s where the new MariaDB Enterprise release comes in.
“This new product is a milestone for SkySQL’s product portfolio, delivering easy installation, configuration and management of sophisticated high availability solutions based on MariaDB and Galera Cluster to customers eager to leverage this technology
, but put off by its inherent complexities,” SkySQL’s Tom Callway blogged this week.
A key part of the release is the MariaDB manager which includes a web based GUI, API and monitoring system. While MariaDB Enterprise is a commercially supported product, the MariaDB component is open-source under the GPL v2 license and available to anyone for free on Github at: https://github.com/skysql
